All depends on the couple involved.
If both people are compatible, then it's perfectly fine. If they both share the same high sex drive, middle of the road, low, celibacy until marriage... they match up and would be content with their physical relationship.
Now if there is an imbalance, say one person has a high sex drive and the other doesn't, or someone is used to having sex be a part of a relationship and the other wants to wait until marriage.. then it depends on how each person prioritizes that with the other aspects of the relationship (emotional, personality, interests, etc). If a certain level of sex (from a lot to none at all) is a "must have" for that person, then it's important for that person and will impact that person's relationships if with someone that is "not on the same page" or willing to compromise.

very important to have a good sex life in a relationship but the relationship should not be built around sex.

If the relationship is good the sex will get better and better as time goes on.
If the relationship is just about sex, the sex will be great at first and then get worse and worse as the newness wears off.
