On Friday, I have to go into the hospital and they plan to try and ripen my cervix overnight. They also plan on sending me home on Saturday. I dont understand. Shouldn't they ripen my cervix and then induce me?

As I understand it your cervix has to be thinned out before they can induce you. I was due friday and had an ultrasound saturday and they found that I was almost 70% effaced, and that happened over a period of about 4 days or so. Your doctor is probably waiting to see if you can start labor once they ripen your cervix. Good Luck!!!

HOLD OFF!!!! Do not induce!!!! Average 1st pregnancies are 41 weeks 1 day & average length of subsequent pregnancies are 40 weeks 3 days... YOU ARE NOT LATE YET. You can safely go 2 more weeks! If you induce you are at a higher risk of needing a c-section!!! I was induced & had a c-section after a long (18 hour) (painful) pitocin induced labor & 1.5 hours of pushing... Your body & baby will let you know when it is time... Call a midwife & ask if you don't believe me!!! I learned my lesson... HOLD OFF!!!

I had my cervix ripened with my induction the day before... They wait because the ripening agent can put you into labor all alone!!! They are trying to give your body a chance! I went the next day for my induction and other than give me a few very weak contractions the agent did NOTHING!!!! Check out this Book : The Thinking Woman's Guide to a Better Birth bu Henci Goer!!!! I hope I am not too late!

Basically they'll take a jelly-like substance and rub it against the cervix to make it start effacing, or thinning out. This itself can start contractions, or they may need to add Pitocen to start you labor. The reason they're going to send you home is because it might not work and there's no reason to keep you in the hospital when you can rest in your own comfortable bed. If your cervix does not ripen with the aid of the gel, they'll call you back to the hospital and start the Pitocen then.

They will either use a gel or a tiny pill that is placed up against the cervix. Usually, they like to try it and make sure you don't have problems with it and then they will send you home to have it work. If during the night, you make progress, and start dialating, they may keep you and start pitocin or break your water. It all depends on your doctor, and the hospital. If, during the night, nothing happens and you don't have any change, they will more then likely send you home. Like it said, it all depends on what the doctor and the nurses feel. They won't send you home if they think things are starting to happen. Talk to your doctor if you are worried, ask any questions you feel like you need to. Ask the nurses to explain what they are going to do and what they are looking for, and be informed as best you can. I hope things work out for you!!!!!

"They" should leave you alone. Your body will do it naturally if given enough time, and there're loads of reasons to give it that time.
