A sphinx is an iconic image of a recumbent lion with a human head in Egyptian and Greek mythology. It is well known in the Theban Plays in which Oedipus solves its riddle and kills it. There is also a major sculpture in Egypt of the sphinx (quite a wonder of the world).

The Sphinx at Giza , was built around the same time of the Keops pyramid ( around 2,300 B.C.). It is a sculpture of a human with the body of a lion. Its exact significance remains a mystery
