I started my car today. And while I was still in park, the RPM's were staying consistently at 2. Which was high for my car to idle at. When I shifted into drive, my car just took off by itself. As if someone had their foot pressed down on the gas. But my feet weren't on any peddles. It was weird. My car just kept going consistently as if the cruise control was on. I checked to see if my gas peddle was sticking, and it wasn't. I drive an automatic. What could be causing this?

I'm sure it has to do with your computer, and it was telling your car to warm up, if it's very cold. If it continues, even after the engine is warmed up, then you may want to get it checked. Best of luck to you.

It sounds like the automatic choke. When the engine is cold in winter, cars are supposed to run at fast idle. After the engine warms up, the engine speed should drop down to about 850 rpm. Before you shift out of park, you are supposed to depress the brake. Some cars won't let you shift out of park without depressing the brake. It is designed so the car won't get away from you.

What type of car (year/make/model/engine size)?
It could be a sticking/binding cable or linkage at the throttle body or a computer/idle motor problem, or even something as simple as a vacuum leak.
This could be a safety concern and should be looked at by a professional just to make sure the car doesn't take off on you unexpectedly. A shop should be able to let you know fairly easily what the problem is and what will need to be done to get it fixed.

These kinds of questions help if you give the year and model, but it sounds like either a throttle cable or it could be the TPS(throttle position sensor). If its an older car with a carburetor it could be a stuck high speed idle.Hope this helps next time maybe give a little more info.

if the car idle above 2000 rpm,it will take off. high idle speed indicate a vacuum leak, throttle cable or throttle valve is binding, and bad idle speed control valve

Need year, make, model.
An old carburated car can do something like this when the plastic float in the carb gets saturated with fuel and the bowl fills and overflows. But thats just with an old car.
Need more info please.

You will have to check one of three things, vacuum leaks, defective coolant temp. sensor and sticky idle air control.
