CD-RW MEnas CD-ReWritable wich means that you can delete, format the CD and use it more than one time.

CD-R Means CD-Readable, Which means that you can only store once on the CD, you can also create a multisession disc to Write more than once on the CD but you can't delete previous data recorded on Disc.

Same thing happens with DVD-R and DVD-RW, the difference is that on a DVD you have more information stored 4 Gigabytes on each DVD against 650 Mb on a CD.

if you Have a CD-Rom unit, you cant burn on any of these.
If you have a CDRW unit, you can buy the CD-R or CD-RW discs.
if you have a DVD ROM unit you can't burn either CD's or DVD's
if you have a DVD-RW unit you can buy at the store any of the mentioned Storage formats.

Hope this is of help.
If you have a DVD Recorder unit, you could Buy anyone

CD-RW - cd rewriteable, this means u can burn info to this disc and then later on delete it and maybe burn something else. Its more expensive than CD-R, and also is less compatatble than CD-R (won't work in some car stereos or cd player, etc)

CD-R - cd recordable, u can burn info to this disc, but its permanent, there nothing u can do after its burned. Cheaper than CD-RW and more compatable (works almost in any CD device)

DVD-RW and DVD-R- are exactly the same thing like the CD's listed above, expect of course, they are DVD's (hold 7 times the information as CD's)

CD- RW is a cd that you can store information on and then erase the info and add more, hence the re-writable (RW). DVD -RW is the same thing but only to store movies. CD-R and DVD-R you can only put information on there once. Once the information is burnt on there is no adding more or taking it off.

Cd's hold appx. 750MB of information.
CD-r can be written to until full, but only once.
CD-rw can be written to and over written more than once.
use CD-rw for data, and CD-r for music discs as most CD players will no read CD-rw.

DVDs are the same in respect to -r and -rw.
the difference is they hold appx. 4.6 gigabytes of information.

these are great for movies or photos.
use DVD-r for movies as most DVD players won't read DVD-rw.
DVD-rw are good for storing data, photos and backing up your computer.
DVD players can usually read Cd's but CD players cannot read DVDs.

CD-RWs and DVD-RWs are for rewriting data. They're great for making changes to big files or files that need to be kept together.

CD-Rs and DVD-Rs are for one time burns. Once data is burnt into it, that is the data that is in it and it cannot be altered and saved back onto the disk. That is great if you want to copy your data on a certain date or have a song collection you want to keep or a movie.

CDs store less data than DVDs.

CD and DVD shouldn't need explaining hopefully.

RW = re-write, meaning it takes CD's or DVD's that can be used over and over again.

R = write only, meaning once you burn something to that CD or DVD it can never be used again.

If you recall recording on cassette tapes....once you broke the tabs out of the top of the tape, you couldn't record on it anymore...in turn making it a R. When the taps are in place, that tape would be a RW.

cd-r and dvd-r you can only write to once. the rw will allow you to write over data on that disk. Use cd for music and small documents, dvd for movies and large amounts of data
