What is a good theme statement that relates to both the scarlet letter and the lord of the flies?

Both books are about human nature and the dangers of "mob mentality". The time and place settings are very different, but they both involve individually moral and upstanding characters pressured to do the wrong thing by their peers/community.

I know it's not a thesis statment, but that is your job.
