the only answer i can think of for this one is that your laptop may not have enough memory to watch the dvd [ you might have to many files downloaded, or to many documents open]

It might be you have a very old laptop, as some of the older P2 laptops had a stutter problem when trying to play DVDs. Choppiness in DVD playback could be a result of DMA (Direct Memory Access, lets hard drives and CD/DVD drives access the system memory) settings on the drive. Try adjusting those and see what happens. DMA may be disabled. It is also possible that the DVD has issues and is causing the problem. You might try to upgrade the DVD play software.

I had a similar issue and it was a firmware update issue with the driver. I found the driver for the dvd player that I had and I searched for it on yahoo. I eventually found a download for a fix on a different computer and it works perfectly fine now.
To find what dvd/cd player to look up, you have go to My computer and click properties. Go to the Hardware tab and click device manager. Under CD/DVD-rom drives you'll find what model you have.

Plug in your laptop. I know personally my laptop has power-saving features which cause it to slow down and skip when watching DVDs or playing games off of battery power!

close any programs that are running in the background - it's likely that they may be using up your processor and memory in the background, causing your dvd software to skip.
