Are you having any probs with your Volvo now that they are owned by Ford? I have heard of electrical difficulties? I have a 1988 240 that is still okay. Would you recommend the new models?

I have had a 87 740, 89 740, 2000 v40, and now a 2000 v70.

The consensus seems to be from a number of Volvo owners that I have talked to is that the Ford merger has been a mixed bag. There are some that say that the old days were the glory days, and that the 240s and 740 ran forever. People who are pro-Ford merger will point out that Volvo in essence only introduced 3 models of cars over a 30 year period prior to the Ford Merger (the 240 which borrowed heavily from the 140 series before it, the all new 740 which morphed into the 900 series, and the front wheel 850 series.)

The Ford merger has provided Volvo with the $$$ to roll out an all-new 40 series, a freshened 80 series, the SUV, the 60 series, and a number of exciting things are planned.

Early 80's Volvos were known for electrical issues (wire casing fell apart over time) and the 70's Volvos were horrible with rust (how many do you ever see on the road still?) Both issues have been fixed since then.

Overall, the problem has always been expensive parts. The new Volvos are the same as the old ones in this regard.

Overall, I would say this - if you are looking for a safe, luxury type car, then put Volvo on your list. If you are looking for a car that is going to be less expensive to maintain over the long-haul, buy a GM product.

Good luck.

Ford own Volvo for a long time. they still have the same problem such as electrical, electrical, electrical, and cheap made parts in the interior. they are so fragile. they lower the price for new vehicle to lure you in but when you need parts, expect to pay 3 or more times more. ashtray that last 3 years cost 145.oo.

There are some problems but the warranty is very good. 5 year 50000 miles bumper to bumper and it is always good to buy the extended warranty. The transmissions start to make noise around 70k miles so it ends up being replaced. Also they are now using 10 modules or more on this vehicles so bugs are still being worked out. Still the safest vehicle out there and ride pretty good. Am thinking of buying one myself. Something small and economical like an S40
