First it is easier to draw. Second it was more cost effective. When you consider that even the small amount of ink neede to put the two missing fingers, over the course of several thousand drawings for a singel cartoon could run into thousands of dollars, it made sense to leave one out. Those two factors are what led to the standard practice of cartoon characters having only 4 fingers.

It relies upon on what variety of sketch your making. in the experience that your making a greater cartoonier character it is around or blocky or a character it fairly is contained in this style of family members guy or The Simpsons then you certainly'll purely ought to provide them 4 arms. in the experience that your making a greater reasonable, anime or manga character then you certainly will ought to provide them 5 arms. I additionally opt to furnish my cartoons 5 arms besides because of the fact i actually don't like it whilst they only have 4, yet I even tend to not permit it hassle me mutually as staring at family members guy or different cartoons that have 4 fingered characters.

They are called cartoon characters, meaning they are made-up pieces of work. That means that you can make them have as many fingers you want. Some prefer 4, or 5, maybe even 7! Its up to the creator and theres really no rule

When you draw 4 fingers and a thumb, it looks strange. Makes it look like there are waaay too many fingers on the hand and it's distracting.
