it is safe but if you try starting your self off in labour it could do more arm to your baby than good. for the pain try a hot bath it could be that the baby is getting it's self ready for labour this is called turning.

I would call the doc about the pains!! BUT, I would not try to induce labor at all!!! This is a quote from "The Thinking Woman's Guide to a Better Birth" by Henci Goer..."Inducing labor when the mother isn't ready to labor often ends in a c-section. So why not wait?" I know first hand I had an (unpleasant) induction at 41 weeks...That ended in c-section!!! Average 1st pregnancies are 41 weeks 1 day, subsequent pregnancies are 40 weeks 3 days... At which point you can go up to 2 weeks over!!! Wait until the baby is ready...Your baby & body know best!!! Wait!!! Check out that book for more info!

At this point the baby has the highest chance of surviving if born now, however YOU ARE NOT FULL TERM UNTIL 40 WEEKS !

It is true that 38 weeks is considered full term, and I know you are uncomfortable, but your baby may not be ready to come yet. If your doctor hasn't talked about induction, then all you can do is wait. I won't tell you what to do to start labor at this point. It's possible that you still have a few weeks to go, or you could go into labor tomorrow. Labor is a very tricky thing. The pains you are feeling are more then likely either little contractions, just your uterus getting ready for the big event, or your ligaments stretching. It happens after the baby settles into position for birth. It could be your cervix starting to dialate. If you have had your 38 week apt, then the doctor should have done an internal exam and told you if you are dialated at all and what your cervix is effaced to. If you haven't had your apt yet, then the next apt will tell you. Most doctors will tell you a guesstimate of how long they think till you have the baby, but don't set your heart on it. Babies will come when they want to, and anything short of medical induction won't start labor before you are ready.

its hard towards the end of the pregnancy and i know how you feel - there are lots of old wifes tales about getting labour started like
have a hot curry
sex
hot baths
and swimming none of these worked for me but i guess everybody is different. You will just have to hang in there and the babe will be here soon - you already have waited a long time so another couple of weeks is nothing really.
It is safe for the babe to come at 38 weeks plus, the sharp pains could be the babe engaging head into the birth canal or braxton hicks contractions (practise ones but these normally happen earlier on) if the pains get really bad let your gp or midwife know and they will examine you and maybe start you off.
good luck

The baby will come when s/he is ready - sorry, not the answer you are looking for! Take lots of walks though, apparently that helps. I did when I was pregnant the first time - and the baby was born on the due date with three hours of labor (which is pretty darn short for a first time). Enjoy your last days of pregnancy and get Lots OF SLEEP!! Because you will be starving for it later! The sharp pains are the baby moving down to start labor and your body adjusting...I had those as well, nothing that you can do about that.

I would say yes. I've been told after 36 weeks it is safe to have the baby. I've been told lots of walking with bring on contractions. I've also been told that an orgasm with spring it too (helped me). So give it a shot. The pains could be the baby dropping into the birth canal getting itself ready. When you feel your stomach/ back having muscle spasms or if you start leaking clear fluids it is time. Congrats on the new baby.

Walking and sex (orgasm, actually) are supposed to help. Even if they don't, what is the harm?

Your pains might be pre labor contractions. Call your doctor to see if you are dilating. You don't want your baby born in the car or the bathroom.

It is safe for your baby to be born now if it is ready. Don't do anything drastic, though. I have heard a lot of stories about mothers who induced their labor early having babies with colic, GERD, and other uncomfortable conditions.

Congratulations. Sleep well and eat lots of ice cream. You won't get much sleep, quiet, or time without diapers and feedings once the baby is born. Enjoy your last few days of freedom.

Yes it is safe. The baby is considered full term at this point. Both of my babies were 15 days early...and no problems. There are lost of things people try to start labor...they seem to work for some but not others. Don't worry it won't be long and soon you won't really remember how uncomfortable you were. Good luck!

I had my son at 38 weeks and he was already 7 lbs 1oz! Things that you can do that will possibly get labor started is lots of walking, I've even heard that driving on bumpy roads or riding no a teeter totter will work. You could also let your dr know that you are very uncomfortable and they will often times induce you at 38 weeks. Try walking LOTS and see what happens.

This is the worst part of the pregnancy and each day will drag...sorry...been there twice! The sharp pains you are feeling are due to pressure and your body getting for labor.

The only safe trick you can do to help bring on labor is to have sex. Sperm will cause the uterus to contract. It helped bring my labor on a week early.

Do not do the castrol oil trick it will make you sick and cause you to become dehydrated!

Best of luck!
