Rental bikes are about 5-10 euros (1 euro = 0.66 pounds) per day. Also, when you're in the Netherlands, don't just visit Amsterdam, but take a day to see some other sights. There are many tour operators that offer bike tours of certain areas.

Its not horribly expensive. The Netherlands in general is far cheaper than for instance scandinavia, or the UK.

Try to shop at the local "Albert Hein" or other shops. Get a cheap hostel and you'll be fine. You might want to consider renting a bike... the best way to see amsterdam of course!

Flights:
Use Easyjet or just fly KLM... they have a lot of flights and promo's. You can be done for 100 pounds.

Take the train from Schiphol to the city centre. wont be more than 4 euro single way. Way better prices than busses, taxis etc.

A youth hostel is about 20 euros a night. The food and drinks are average, cheaper than London. To travel try Easy jet or by bus Euro lines.

Compared to what? Compared to other western European countries it is cheap. Try low cost airlines like Ryan Air, Virgin and Easy Jet for flights from London.
