Open the hood (or bonnet)(or driver's door) and look for the VIN number. This is the Vehical Indentification Number and has 17 digits in it. The 4th to 8th digit positions represent the original equipment codes, which include OEM engine and transmission. The tenth digit represents the Model Year. The 12th - 17th digits represent the last 6 digits of the Serial Number. You may have to go to a dealer to find out what the code digits actually stand for. If you have had an engine change, or engine exchange, the digits may not represent which engine is now in the car. Sometimes you can get this information from the local DMV, as in the case where you are buying a car from out-of-state or from a foreign country.
