One thing can be that their brains aren't fully developed, so they see the world and react to it differently than someone more mature. (A PBS special on the brain said the pre-frontal cortex may not be mature until early- to mid- twenties.)

There could be other contributing factors in their lives as well, including emotional instability.

I did some research on this topic and was told by experts dealing with teen suicide that often times drugs or alcohol are what pushes the kid who isn't happy over the edge and into committing suicide. I was told that drugs/alcohol can both make a bad mood worse but also reduce the inhibitions that would otherwise stop someone from committing suicide.

I was also told that sometimes the immature individual romanticizes suicide or death without really "digesting" the finality of it. Sometimes a young person can be so unhappy and feel so hopeless (a sign of depression) he/she may not be able to realize that if he/she gets through the rough period things will get better. Serious depression can affect a person's reasoning ability.

I believe there could also be the chance that the young person who has one, giant, wave of overwhelming rage/anger may find it so unbearable he could do something to hurt himself just because the rage was so unbearable at the time. People who would not hurt anyone else may find it unbearable enough to need to put an end to the rage that is so unbearable. This theory, though, is something I have reason to suspect but that I have not heard from any experts.

Many just feel awkward in their social situations because they grow up around other teenagers whose cliques mean everything to them and for some reason they can't fit into those cliques. A few have bad family situations and some even commit suicide because they had a bad breakup. Basically the same reasons a person would get involved with drugs (other than for recreation, obviously).

Japan has the highest teenage suicide rate in the world and there is a reason for this too. It's because the adolescents there feel so pressured by their parents to do well that they feel they just can't take it anymore. I don't know if teenagers in the United States have the same kind of pressure as them, but it can be a reason as well.

often the cause is depression . reactive depression being the most common. lack of life experiences. can be a few events not going well in a short time . or many years of sadness that is clinical low grade depression.
sadly the persons reason's are often things that would have been forgot about in 5 years.
even more sad is that miss understood communication and misconceptions about themselves and what others think of them is right up there on the list.
intense pressure to do well in school from themselves or from others
and then something as simple as a b or an f on some paper.
so for the most part it is over blown responses to situations that
could have been dealt with in short order if the teen had just gone to someone an adult professional and talked about how they feel and asked for help.
scientific tests of teens brain activity and brain chemistry has shown that this notion that teens are all nuts is not so far from the truth. not to insult teens i was one to but if the same activity in the brain was seen in an adult along with chemistry and the behaviors that go along with teen years the adult would be seen as having manic depression and delusions.
happily doctors don't fail to see that teens are teens and that is life. the answer talk . the answer if you suspect a friend is thinking about this talk to them and tell an adult.

Mostly they don't understand the purpose and meaning of life. They are not engaged properly and so of course they are depressed. The Vedas (means knowledge) say that this world is Maya (illusion) and is temporary and full of misery. It says we are all eternal spirit souls, part and parcel of the Supreme Soul also known as Krishna, Allah, Jehovah, Vishnu, etc. If one does not connect with our maker they are bound to suffer tremendously. Those who commit suicide think if they kill them self they will end their misery, but that is the opposite. They will become a miserable ghost who suffers incessantly the misery they experienced before the time of death for a very long time. They become stuck between worlds due to taking their life before its time. Go to harekrishnatemple.c Read Bhagavad Gita as it is By Bhaktivedanta Prabhupada which gives the meaning and purpose to human life.

Stress. Many bad things happening in a short period of time. The stress of school, friends, parents, life in general builds up and causes a deep depression. The person feels there is no hope and feels they would be better off not living.

The need to be appreciated. And some failure that occurs. Life has too many rewards. For any one to feel like a failure. Especially as a Younger Person. If you know someone like that? Advise someone that they may become suicidal. If it's YOU? Don't let one or two setbacks, get you down. You have far more days of happiness, right around the corner.

The feeling that they are not understood, that no matter what they say or do or how much they explain, they will never be understood. And that they are convinced that nobody really cares anyway. The emotional turmoil is sometimes just too much for them.
