I am colorblind and can see colors. First only men can be colorblind as it is a recessive gene passed by the mother. There are different types of colorblindness. If you have ever been to the eye docter and are a male, you have taken the colorblindness test. It is a circle containing dots and within is a number created by dots of a specific color.
When you are colorblind, you cannot differentiate colors from one another. This is often misunderstood and always frustrating to explain. Here is the best way I can explain it to you. When I was a child and would color with my box of 64 crayola crayons, I would know what colors went together, but would have to read the crayon to find the color I wanted. If I just looked at the box, the red crayons and the green crayons all looked like the same color shades. The blue crayons and the purple crayons and the black crayons all looked like the same shades of color and the yellow, orange and lighter green crayons all looked like the same shades. So when I would want a yellow crayon, there was a good chance, I would pick up a yellow-green, or light green, or yellow orange.

Another good example is when you look at a deer in the woods. Most people can differentiate the brown deer from the green and brown woods. I cannot. I can only find it when the deer moves.

So I still see a blue sky and I still see green grass, but I may say a flower is blue when it is purple. Here is another funny and slightly embarrising story to show how it affects my life. I bought a pair of pants, I think from Structure when that was still around, and thought for a year that the pants were brown. I walked around with shirts that would easily match brown pants. One day, a year after wearing the pants, my mom stopped me and told me I didn't match because I was wearing a shade of brown shirt and, get this, green pants. Well that was how I looked for a year, so I threw the pants in the trash so it wouldn't happen. again. Now, thankfully, my wife is always with me to help me match my clothes.

There is a very small number of people who are completely colorblind and only see shades of black and white. These people are very rare though.

It depends upon the degree of blindness. I have heard people say they could see dark and shadows. Some don't see anything but black. If a person became blind in childhood, it is possible for them to still "dream" in color and see the blue sky/green grass again. Of course, they cannot make up for blindness but can cultivate a colorful imagination and develop other senses more fully.

They don't have a reference to go by, so how would they know what color they see if you asked them? If they were not born blind then they would probably see visions of colors they were previously able to see, but theres no way for me or anyone else on here to answer this question with certainty.

wow. very thought provoking.

he does not see a color at all?
if he is blind to color than how can he even see it?
is he blind to emptyness?
Is there not more to see than color itself?
The absence of sight only deprives a person of colors, and shapes,

not of their "soul"
not of their personality.

And to correct Mr. Colorblind below me. It IS possible for a woman to be colorbline. Rare, but possible. A woman can become a carrier, if her father is colorblind, (his X chromosome would have the recessive gene). If she (A heterozygous female) were to mate with a colorblind husband, and begat a girl there is a 50% chance that the girl would be colorblind.

They don't "see" anything. Someone who used to be able to see and then somehow becomes blind might think in color, but they cant see. Someone who has always been blind does not see anything, they do not understand the concept of sight firsthand.

Close your eyes in a dark room. That's the color he sees.

In order to see any colour, first you need light, but a blind man is not able to register any kind of light. Any object has a particular colour because it reflects "some kind of colour" and absorbs "other kind of colour", because common light is made up of all the colours.

the only way to know is ask as many blind people as possible who were born with vision, then merely compile the results, anything else is speculation at best.
