It depends on the number of people you're taking. With the cost of gas, a road trip may save you money over, let's say, 4 plane tickets to Orlando. Plus, you get the added experience of the drive down, and if you plan accordingly you can stop and see all sorts of little roadside attractions (like the first KFC in Corbin, Kentucky).
I made the drive with one other person, and it can be kind of brutal. Make sure you bring cds, books on tape, or a satellite radio, unless you're a fan of listening to the same three rap songs and country songs on the clear channel radio stations.
Essentially, get on expedia.com or travelocity.com, punch in the times of your trip, and find out how much tickets will be. Then take your average miles per gallon (highway), google map the trip to Orlando, both ways, and see how much gas you'll need to make the trip. Remember to factor in stopping to eat, staying in a motel/hotel if you don't have enough drivers to take their turn. If the numbers are pretty much the same, you may be better off just flying, if only for the convenience.
Personally, I like road trips. I like seeing different places, and I like the convenience of having a car when you reach your destination. If you've never made a drive that long before, I'd almost suggest it purely for the experience. Everyone should go on a long road trip at least once in their life.

That would be a very long drive. If you;ll be traveling with children, I don't recommend it. They'll be bored and they'll drive you crazy the entire way down. Plus, its just a long way for kids to have to sit through. If everyone in your family traveling are adults, and you make the drive into a scenic road trip with stops along the way, then it might be worth it.
But I think coming from Chicago, your best bet would be to fly in. If you stay at a Disney Resort, your transportation will be free. If not, you'll need to rent a car.

My husband and I drive it every year to go to the Daytona 500. Its not that bad, we drive straight through to Orlando, takes about 18 hours, lots of nice scenery/hills. Be sure to take both the Atlanta and Macon bypasses in GA, to avoid heavy traffic. Having a portable dvd and xm doesn't hurt either! Good luck!

It is worth it. On the way you can stop at Mammoth Caves and other places. Your children will value the opportunity to see some of this great country of ours. You could go through Washington DC.
