Dear Mother and Father: I am going off to fight in the war. They have promised me regular pay and I'll send it home to you because I won't need it. They said they'll feed us and doctor us and I even got an almost-new pair of boots. I had to buy my own gun but there is a tent where you can get free bullets. I'm not sure why we're fighting and don't much care. You know I've always liked fighting and getting paid for it is my idea of heaven. Some guys say it's over slavery and then other guys say it's because the South wants to be its own country. None of those things matter to me. As long as I can help you keep the farm, I'll fight. Dear Mom & Dad:
Well i finally did it, i'll plan on serving the Union and making things right in the world. We'll be home by Christmas, the regimental commander, Colonel Chamberlain said so. The rebs will be licked for sure. Our proud forces will put down this rebellion and we'll have ol Jeff Davis behind bars in know time.
