If dogs prefer the taste of cat food over that of dog food, why can’t they manufacture dog food to taste like cat food? I mean, I understand the nutritional differences between the two. But artificial flavorings are everywhere – in our chips, sodas, etc. Why don’t they develop an artificial flavoring that can be used to make dog food taste as nasty as cat food? That will keep dogs from eating the cat’s food, and will solve a dilemma that we pet owners have been struggling with for decades.

The problem is that it is impossible for us (humans) to determine how the canine taste buds interpret artifical flavorings. Although artifical flavorings are used in pet food products wouldwide, they are only included in the formulas because the animals have reacted positively to them in testing, however, we don't have any way of determining if a certain artifical flavor "tastes like" cat food to a dog. We simply can't ask them.

Along with the taste the size makes a big difference from dog food and cat food! My dogs can chew and hog cat food down so much easier! Then cat food has stuff in it for energy! I'd hate to have my 100lb German Shepard Husky running around like a chicken with its head cut off!
