If it is a large appliance like a fridge freezer, phone your council, and they will take it away for free.

My local township was no help so I had to get creative. Then I remembered the guy with the stoves in his back yard. I left a note on his front door and it turns out he was a scrap dealer. He cam to my house and for 50 bucks haled some things away. While he was here neighbors caught wind of it and filled his truck up. The guy though it was Christmas, I was glad to just have the stuff out of the neighborhood.

Usually scrap deals do not advertise in the yellow pages, they have pretty low overhead. Call a few auction houses and they may be able to point you in the right direction, or hang out at the end of an auction( the kind they have at peoples houses) and you will see odd looking people cleaning up the stuff that does not sell or taking pats of lots that dealers do not want. They are most likely scrap dealers.

Some junk yards will let you bring things in for a fee. In Pennsylvania air conditioners cost 25 to 50 to drop off.

If it is a toaster just bust it in small pieces. Toss the metal with the recycling and the plastic in the trash.

Check the newspaper or yellow pages. In the US, in a lot of areas people will come and pick them up for free--don't pay anyone to haul it off, I used to have an appliance store, hauled off the old units for free, and sold them to an appliance repair place for $25 each. Many units can be repaired, or parts recycled so in most larger communities there are people who pick them up and repair or sell to a reseller.

Local council will remove in most cases. I believe that manufacturers of equipment are now liable under EU law to dispose of all old equipment. In most cases this responsibility will be passed to retailers. When buying new equipment ask them to take old equipment away. If all else fails dump it tonight in doorway of the shop you bought it from.
