Lee - Jackson Hollday? State of Virginia?

In the state, of Virginia. On friday (1-5-07) there was a hollday. Just for the state of Virginia. All of the state offices where closed. Can someone tell me why? I went to the DMV, here in Virginia, and there was a sign that said "Closed For State Hollday Lee Jackson Day. Why?

Some states just have arbitrary holidays for their natives that the states legislature passes to honor them.
