I have a fondue burner that takes denatured alcohol only I cant find any. The local hardware store doesn't have any and I dont have time to look anywhere else since the fondue was for this evening. Can I substitute it with anything else? 99% alcohol mabye? Or petrol? I dont want to burn the house down though ;)

Hello, Again,
I have used those "gel" type canisters of "Sterno".
They sell that stuff all over, for use in campstoves, fondue, and food service warming products.
Again, hardware stores, K-Mart,Walmart, any place that sells picnic or camping, or party type supplies, have them.
They are very inexpensive.
Hope this helps,
Dave

PS..................Rubbing alcohol will work!............Vodka?
Just be careful though, alcohol has a very clear flame.

You may find something else that would burn in the burner, but would you put propane in a gasoline car? Why not? Because it may damage the equipment. This type of equipment is designed to burn ratios of fuel and air, and also operate at a set temperature range. Your car gives off "X" amount of heat while operating, and changing the fuel would change the amount of heat it gave off, perhaps burning other components in the process. Best bet would be to not use the burner tonight. Good luck, stay safe.

Stonecat is correct, except in race engines this is not Pure alcohol, also the engine is "beefed-up" stronger crank, pistons, etc to take the force that it produces
