not the monitor. anyway also check to see how many running processes you have going. and yes boost the memory.

Your friends are wrong. To speed up your computer, you can do a few software tricks before you start to think about hardware. Defragment your hard disk, scan for viruses, and run a registry cleaner like CCleaner. Run msconfig to find out what processes you have set to run at startup and remove the unnecessary ones. If your hard drive is more than 60-70 percent full, free up some space on it.
Then, for hardware, if you're running Windows XP and you only have 256MB of ram, upgrade to at least 512MB.
Edit:
After rereading your question, ohaqqi is probably right. Some LCD monitors have horrid amounts of input lag. If the monitor's response time is over 5-8ms or so, you will notice a very annoying lag. This cannot be fixed, other than buying a better monitor. If I recall correctly, the worst response time in a production monitor is/was 65 milliseconds, which is unusable.

you've probably noticed your computer seeming to slow down over the time you've owned it. this is due to the fact that there are most likely more and more applications running in the background.
you can add more memory which will make a marked improvement(the more the better) and/or do away with some of the applications that load at startup.
press start/run and run msconfig from the run box. you'll see applications you can stop running at startup. you may notice some applications you may have thought you'd uninstalled. you'll need to restart for any changes to take effect. be careful and only uncheck things you're sure about. many like quicktime and the like can be unchecked because anything needed to run those files will launch in conjuction with the application.
type services.msc from the run window also to see what applications are running or not and wether you want them to run automatically/manually or disable them. again be careful disabling some microsoft applications but many like quicktime can be changed to manually start when the application starts.
good luck...

How much power it takes has nothing to do with your computer speed...You need more RAM or a faster processer...but RAM would be a good start.
And it also depends on what's slow with your computer. Is it slow opening programs or going places online?
Opening programs and such can be fixed with more RAM and maybe running Disk Defragmenter (Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools >Disk Defragmenter) (It MAY take a while if you've never done this and you've had your computer a while)
Online speed can only be fixed with faster service, which will cost more...but I'm sure you already know most of this....

its the ram..you can check how much ram you have but i forget how...ram is random access memory and that is what runs things while operating other than the cpu ..the hard drive has nuthin to do with it... lcd screens take up a little more speed but not much..once u find how much u have..i would recommend getting one gig of ram or at least 512 mb...if u want to game online and multi task faster get the 1 gb ..u can get it installed by geek squad at best buy for less than 50 bucks.. i did it

You have be more concise on your question. Is your Monitor's reaction time slower than your old monitor, or is your computer now running slower because you got a new monitor (I seriously doubt that).
Is it always slow, or for certain programs? The hard drive is probably not the problem. Speed depends more on RAM and your processor. I would start by running a spyware program like AdAware and then giving more specifics.

dont get me wrong but ur friends said something silly...ur pc can be slow for several reasons like ram, pop ups, cookies, u may used nearly full space of ur hard drive, cache memory etc etc.
hav a look on ur ram size and what purposes u using ur pc for? coz if u use ur pc for games u need some specification again if u do desigin u need some specific specifications.....sorry dont get bored....
lets try to make ur pc a little bit faster...................
first have look ur drives...and make sure u have 15% free space on every drive.
do disks defragment(go to start menu, all program, accessories, system tools, and select disk defregmenter,) select ur drive and wait until its done.its really good for ur computer but may take few hours to complete.
have a look is there any spywhare, these really makes ur system slow? use service pack ie anti spyware(can get that from microsoft.com for free if u dont have).
look for the virus..... and use anti virus....
no more for now....bye

you monitor will have no effect. If it just started getting slow you need to check for spyware/virus. Lots of free programs out there to help. Ad-aware, ewido, Search and destroy. As far as speed I'm assuming you mean on the internet, if its not spyware/virus slowing you down you may want to double you memory, thats the least expensive and easy choiuce

LCD monitors take up less power than regular CRT Monitors. Try cleaning your files on the computer regularly. run disk cleanup and defrag on a weekly basis to keep you computer in tip top condition. Also clean your internet temperory files and history. Only takes few seconds but can save you a lot of hassle

im going to b4 u get more ram do a defragment, if u have wireless internet it could be that, or do a defragment, and a spyware check just in case if none of that works im going to say go with a memory upgrade...and just to tell u the monitor has nothing to do with this.
good luck.
