From Internet explorer
Tools, Options, Connections, Double click your default connection, advanced, ensure that two bottom tick boxes are not ticked. No tick in - Disconnect when idle and no tick in - disconnect when connection may no longer be needed

Broadband shouldn't be timing out, thats the whole idea of it, its on constantly

if you have unlimited broadband, it is possible that your Internet Service Provider is shutting you down - e.g. if left on all night? - some so-called unlimited broadband providers do limit extended periods.

Keep feeding the metre. Or, perhaps, there is a setting on your PC that needs adjusting. At least you can use the time out to make a cup of tea.

is it because you have energy saver or a screen saver turned on?
try disabling these first in control panels
