I regret that your question is a bit vague and difficult for me to comprehend. Could you re-ask it using clearer language?

The given example, | -2 + i |, is certainly an "absolute value" expression, and the vertical bars indicate that the inner expression (-2+i) must be evaluated first ... then, if necessary, drop the negative sign. Absolute value always yields positive (or zero) values!

Another example:

| -5 + 6 | = | 1 | = 1

| x + 3 | when x=-15
Here, substitute for x:
| (-15) + 3 | = | -12 | = 12

I hope this helps!
