The amount of time we have, what we can afford, habit, familiarity and physical limitations.

Primarily it people's interests, they choose to utilize the various media that they like for personal entertainment and knowledge - a person who likes sports will watch sports on TV and read about it in newspapers and magazines etc.
The workplace also play a role, if a job requires the usage of a type of media then it will be used in order to maintain employment there.
