They are no longer under contract to a team and can be signed to play for any team that wants them.

Well athletes have contract...aslong as they are under their contract...lets say a 3 year contract, then they have to stay with that team. Well after their 3 years or whatever their contract is that means they are a free agent. Which means they can either re-sign with their old team under a new contract...lets say they sign 5 more years. Or they are free to talk with other teams that might pay them more. So it basically means they are free to do as they want, and are under no contract.

They are not in a contract with a particular team, which means any team can pick them up. Most athletes sign a contract for "x" amount of years with a particular team they are bound to.
