Because tight (knotted) muscles do not need anything to cause them to hurt, there is a reasonable chance that is the combination of the one that goes down the outside (top) of the upper leg and one from the inside of the leg that goes to the knee cap. Heat is good but if the muscles are knotted - following the it you will find unseen places that are sore to even light pressure - those are where pressure need to be applied to loosen the knot(s) which will relieve the pain. If you do not already know what you are doing I recommend seeing a massage or physical therapist at least at first.

I'm about the same age. If it's like the PAIN (like a knife stabbing me) I had, it came on very fast and without apparent reason. Turned out to be inflammation, but after a shot of cortisone and a couple of days rest, it was OK again and I've had no problems with it since (6 months ago).

Let's face it...when you get old, some parts just start to wear out. He just might be getting the early signs of arthritis, and needs to put some Icy Hot on it and take Ibuprophen to reduce the pain of swelling. Tell him to keep active, but don't put more stress on it than he can bear. Tell him to check with his doctor to make sure of what it is, and find out his options from there. <*)))><
