I know the Democrats were very strong in the Pre-Republican years. (Lincoln was the first Republican).. but how about after?

Republicans: Lincoln, Grant, Hayes, Garfield, Arthur, Harrison, McKinley, Roosevelt, Taft, Harding, Coolidge, Hoover, Eisenhower, Nixon, Ford, Reagan, Bush I, Bush II...grand total of 18 since the Republican Party was founded.

Democrats: Pierce, Buchanan, Johnson,, Cleveland (counts twice as 22nd and 24th president), Wilson, Roosevelt, Truman, Kennedy, Johnson, Carter, Clinton....grand total of 12 since the Republican Party was founded.

This might be misleading. There has been a strong showing on both sides.

FDR (dem) was the only person elected to the office more than twice, and that says something for the mood of the country.

It also makes you wonder what happened to Democrats, when their "rock star" is Barak Obama, a no-name professor from Illinois with almost no national political experience, and a woman who was just a housewife until a few years ago (Hillary is still a junior senator with no previous political experience).

Is that really the best they can do?

It's really a moot point. Neither the Democrats nor the Republicans of today hold to the same principles as the parties bearing the same names in the 1850s.

i have to agree with the person above me . They ( republicans or deacrats ) are far from the people they stated of as. now they are only interested in how to make each other look bad in the eyes of the voters so they can get more votes. It really is pathetic.

I counted last year

one more republican then democrat

i believe this count though was based upon every term counting as one president, instead of counting 2 term presidents as only one.
