Firecracker is correct. A spanner is a specific kind of wrench, not your garden variety crescent or monkey wrench.
A spanner is not adjustable. It looks like an animal's claw, except it has a catch on the end so it can grab a groove in a circular nut and pull it around.
I haven't come across the need for a spanner for quite some time, but my old British and German motorcycles have nuts that require them.

It's a wrench. A British term for wrench is spanner.

On this side of the pond, the generic term is wrench. Over here, a spanner is a particular class or type of wrench. Nothing to do with nuts.

In mechanics tems like if someone said your gonna need a spanner wrench to get that off....It's a wrench the expands to fit different sized specialty nuts. Like the wrench needed to remove the cap on a hydraulic ram on the side the piston comes out.
