I mean when Superman wants to "hide" his identiy, he combs his hair a bit differently, puts on glasses and a suit and acts like a nerd but nobody can make the connection between the two even though people have seen both of them before!

Is that the most retarded storyline in all comics?!

It's called suspension in disbelief. That's the artist trying to catch if your "really into" the story. But yeah, the people of Metropolis must have an IQ of about 13 to not notice that.

They actually did jokes on that. There was an old issue (back in the 60’s) where Clark opens his shirt to reveal the Superman suit underneath and says “I’ll tell you why I’ll never marry you, Lois, or you, Lana! Who wants a wife who’s SO STUPID that she doesn’t realize I’m Clark Kent when I put these glasses on?”

(It was actually a bad guy impersonating Clark, who was pulling a practical joke on them. )

But there are other things. They always emphasized it in the old time radio shows, that Clark spoke in a thin tenor voice, where Superman spoke in a deep masculine baritone voice. When he appears as Superman, he moves his face around slightly at super speed. You don’t notice it, but if anybody tries to take a photo of him, his face is blurred. As Clark, he slouches, so that he does not appear to be his full 6 foot four inch height.

But most of all, (since Crisis on Infinite Earths and the reboot of the DC universe) the general public is not aware that Superman even has a secret identity. Luthor once assigned one of his people to find out where Superman came from, but when she found out that Superman was secretly Clark Kent, he fired her!

Know why? Because Luthor thought nobody could have such power and be willing to conceal it. Nobody could stand to pretend to be normal and ordinary like that! His own pride misled him. Because Luthor could not imagine refraining from showing off his power and expecting admiration all the time, he thought Superman was just like him. So he didn’t believe that his hireling uncovered Superman’s secret identity, because he could not imagine Superman being willing to keep himself secret!

You are right, the whole “keeping the secret identity secret” schtick was getting tiresome, and it’s a good thing that DC dropped it. There are only so many times you can use a gag like that.

The writers find it necessary that everyone not make the connection. It allows for the story line to unfold to their liking. Never mind that it doesn't follow logically that you can't see Clark Kent and notice he resembles Superman. The writers want the audience to believe a cowlick / glasses are enough disguise for the series.

The glasses are not the only thing that hides who he is. His speech, body language, the way he acts. Superman is heroic, Clark ducks and covers, Superman stands tall and confident, Clark slouches and trips on everything, Superman speaks in a deep and commanding voice, Clark speaks a bit nervous and sometimes unheard. All this plays into the flaw that we judge others upon their appearance and mannerism.

everyone living in metropolis suffers from a rare consition causing there brains to short-circuit whenever they see someone wearing a pair of glasses. in their vision they actually see a creature resembling a talking carrot and therefore never make the link. Either that or the creators think we're stupid!

Lois figured it out eventually; and you have to admit, comics are more simplistic than real life, at least, they have been, but I bet a lot of people start figuring it out soon.
