Do something you enjoy or that will give you benefits that you want. If you like food, try a restaurant, if you want travel deals, try and airline, if you like clothes try a clothing store, etc.
A job in a restaurant as a host/ess would be good because it can teach you people skills and give you confidence.
Don't worry about getting the applications, just go in and feel like you're worth a million bucks and that they'd be lucky to have you, be modest, smile and leave an impression.
Only speak with the manager and if you don't get a call back, then call when it's not busy and ask if they had a chance to look at it.
If they say manager is not available then ask for their name. Next time you call back just ask for them by their first name and they will think you're a friend so they'll pass the phone on to them.
Good luck.

Most 16 years can work where there is not any potential for harm. Check with your school on any employers that may have called them wanting good students who are reliable. Your state may have differnt requirements for young workers so check with your state employment agency website as well. Another thing, don't be afraid to ask an employer for work. You are doing what the rest of us tax-paying employees all over are America are doing... paying taxes and earning your keep. Don't be shy. Be confident of yourself, but don't apply for a job you don't think you can physically or mentally do. Look at your interests. If you like floral arrangements, try a florist. If you like number, call a CPA, they might need additional help at this time of year. Grocery stores and fast food are usually the first place to start. Good Luck and remember to be on time, no cheating or stealing from an employer. These early jobs will lead to character reference in the near future. Your young future is laying ahead of you and don't mess it up by getting a bad reputation from an employer. Employers talk to all kinds of people within your towns and news spread. You positively don't want to have your name spread as a lazy, no good and thiefing worker. Always ask an employer if you have caught up with your current work duties/requirements if he/she has anything else you can do. This will really look good and offer more benefits than you could possibly know.

i can't tell you where to work, but i used to work at a pizza hut when i was your age and it was pretty fun. As for going in for an application, you have to think, every person who works in every place you've ever been, at some point went in and got an application. the people who work in those places are asked for applications everyday, believe me, its no big deal! i would also recommend filling out the application and turning it in while you're there. this will help your chances, and you never know, the girl who gets you the application might be hot?......just a thought.

why on earth are you afraid of the applications? Oh wait, you're afraid of the walking IN to get the app, right?
Yeah, that first "sorry we're not hiring right now" is kind of a slap in the face---why dont you make a list of places you would like to work at, and call them FIRST "are you accepting applications?"....It can't hurt ya know.
Good luck kid, and thanks for wanting to get a job and not be a loser!

If you are afraid of getting the application, then perhaps you should find a job where you don't have to deal with people. Like a warehouse or something. UPS maybe?

Yeah you need to grow a pair. Go and get the applications. You cant be afraid to do it. They wont beat you up. Just go to McDonalds and apply for a job, you will probably get one, and make a little cash.
