MLK day is a federal holiday. The banks, city offices and postal workers are off.
My first question would be are you in a public school? If so, then I would think that the school board would have to vote on it and then pass it with the superintendent, or whomever. If you are in a public school, then that may not be the case.
But anyhoo... since you ask if it is racist, are you celebrating the freedom that Dr. King fought and died for? Is you school embracing the fact that the white and latino children are going to school in a peaceful nation? If no, then I understand why your school is not out. If they are then they are not embracing and celebrating what Dr. King's dream was.
Why don't you write an essay to your school board asking their viewpoints on not celebrating this national holiday!?!

I think you're just mad because you didn't get to sleep in like everyone else. The school being racist is just an excuse. Something tells me if you had the day off you would have just slept in and not even think about what a great man Martin Luther King was.

while i am a strong believer in Martin Luther Kind Jr. and all the things he stood for, I am not sure if what the school district did was necessarily a racist action. putting together a school district calendar is a lot of work, especially if the school district is large.
that said, let me ask you one question. why do you want today off?
if you feel strongly about Martin Luther King and feel that his birthday should be recognized, start a petition and take it to your school district. it'll be a lot of work and may take a while to be put into effect (as most school district plan their academic calendar years in advance), but if it is something you care deeply about, go for it!
if, on the other hand, you are just worried about getting a day off (as your extra-sleep comment lead me to believe), the answer is even simpler. All schools are required to be in session for the same number of days...so it'll even out in the end.
as a final comment, remember that equal opportunity for education was something that Dr. King felt strongly about...if you are in school today, spend that time being thankful for the privilege of education.

Many schools in my area have MLK Day off but not president's day or any other "holiday." It is not a racial thing, schools need a certain number of school days and if there was a day off for every little holiday there would never be school. Millions of Americans worked today and they are not shouting racism. You will learn that when you grow up and realize not every thing that happens to you a racial issue!

i imagine that's tremendous to take a second to look on the oppression that ecu descendants have positioned on all different ethnic communities. however, i believe it needs to be per week of school committed to the black oppression, jap internment camps (I not in any respect discovered this in college I purely discovered when I went to OR and pronounced issues outfitted with information from the employees) the terrible issues which have surpassed off to the close by peoples both the Indians and Chicanos. Even the Irish immigrants were oppressed and compelled to paintings in sweat shops contained in the 19th century. now to not indicate the racism that's dealing with everybody that sounds like they have been descendant from the middle east. i imagine the country must have a multicultural week. My intense college had this and each day we had a speaker from a distinct ethnic team. I discovered lots in this time. it continually all started on MLK's birthday and persevered till eventually Friday after we had an ice cream social with each and each and every of the week's audio equipment so shall we search for suggestion from from them and ask all of them questions.

My school never had that day off. When I was a child we had to do something on that holiday but as we grew older it became just a plain ordenary day with nothing speciel to it. Your school isn't racist they just want to get all the school days over with no makeup days in the summer. Teachers like summer vacation too.

I wouldn't complain that's one less day you have to make up for, also it may not be political related that they don't recognize that day for celebration, be honest the are many other black men in history that is more deserving then Dr king. I am not trying to take away from him he was a great man but even rev. Jesse Jackson has done more for blacks and Whites and our country, than the good Dr. just my opinion sorry you didn't get the day off. but that's how it goes with politics.

My school deos not recognize it as a Federal Holiday, but what would you do if you were off of school anyway, something productive like learning who he was, and what he done for people in general. I hope your school has speakers come through, maybe learn about not just Dr. King, but other pioneers and martyrs.
