Has anyone here ever written and published a romance novel? I'm wondering how much money can be made from your average, drug store novel?

I am in the process of writing several romance novels. I've also written short stories (some published) and I belong to Romance Writers of America, where I've learned that there's not a great deal of money to be made, especially when you're first starting out. The most common response I've heard from the "How much money can you make" question is that the average advance for a first novel (like the drug store novels you refer to) is anywhere from $5,000 to 10,000. If that sounds like a lot to you, factor in how long it takes to write a novel, start to finish, edit and revise it, submit it to dozens of publishers and get tons of rejections before finally (if you're lucky) getting it accepted by one. Then there are numerous revisions after that and then, if you want it to make money, you have to publicize it, get a web site, go to book signings and make up advertising material.

But if it's something you truly enjoy, go for it. Keep in mind the few who make the big bucks at it are well-established authors like Nora Roberts and they, too, started out as a newcomer before they eventually made it big. Best wishes!
