Most schools that have uniform policies do a swap program. Older students hand in their uniforms to be given to younger ones. I am not familiar with any other aid given for uniforms. I know that because my girls go to a Catholic school, our local church is willing to assist with tuition, etc.

I believe most schools that require them have some means to get uniforms at reduced cost. However, as a parent of two kids in private school with uniforms, I don't believe they cost any more than the clothes you would buy anyway. I'd say probably less because there isn't as much "need" to constantly buy what's the newest trend.

Besides, decent school uniforms purchased from some reputable place will last a long time. We now generally buy from LL Bean which is a little more expensive; we used to buy at JC Penney, but the LL Bean ones just last longer and we think they're a better value for your money. Many schools have a used uniform exchange where you can get some of these good quality uniforms for next to nothing.

Almost all schools will have a hardship fund for children whose parents are on a low income. You can enquire about this either at the school or the education board. Also, if you're the British parent of a child in their final two years of school, remember that they can apply for a school grant.
