People keep answering stuff like "Is it okay to have a glass of wine now and then?" with the claim that one drink is enough to cause fetal alcohol syndrome.

Those of you posting that -- tell me about why you believe as much. Give me a link to a particular case, say.

Re. "you should ask your parents about it" -- oh, they do think the contemporary paranoia's a laugh, yes.

But _I_ know it's nonsense; I'm just wondering what's going on in the minds of the "OMG, ur baby will be retarded if u have a beer!" crowd.

For that crowd:

My doctor told me it is okay to have a small glass of wine every now and then. I can't anyway because it makes me sick but to my knowledge it is when it is overdone. I cannot give you an example of one glass but I know from the experience of watching my nieces that it definitly causes big problems drinking alot after your first trimester.

I would never drink alcohol knowingly while pregnant. But, most women don't even know until they are 5-6 weeks along. I'm sure some of them drank during that time with no bad results to their babies. Still, if you are trying to get pregnant, it's a good idea to stay away from alcohol.

It is not a matter of believing it, it is a matter of not taking the risk. Since obviously they cannot study the effects of alcohol on a fetus, there is no way to know if one glass of wine or 10 will effect your unborn child. In other words some babies may be affected greatly by one glass of wine consumed by a pregnant woman, while a pregnant woman who consumes several glasses of wine over a long period has no affect at all on her unborn child, and vice versa.
There is just no way to know, since every woman metabolizes alcohol differently and every fetus will be affected differently. It is probably best to abstain just to be on the safe side.

One drink will not cause FAS, and you should ask your parents about it. Back when your mom was pregnant with you she probably had a mai tai at a party, or a glass of champagne, right? Did you have FAS? Probably not.

Other people should mind their business and let you have one beer if you really want it. It's not like you're going to a keg party, right?

Take care and best of luck with your new baby! Have fun!

I didn't say anything about FAS. However, I think it's an extremely low thing to do to drink while pregnant. The alchohol goes to the baby. You wouldn't feed your newborn baby alcohol would you?

I don't know who's posting that but my friend's doctor told her she could have up to 1 drink a day THROUGHOUT her pregnancy and the baby would be fine. She didn't of course, butcould have if she wanted to.

just don't. If I was ever at a restaraunt and a pregnant lady was drinking booze. I would throw my food at her.
