I'm Welsh. I live in England and I'm engaged to an Englishman. It would be insanely hypocritical of me to "hate" English people. I think most of the time its more good-natured than you imply. A lot of it is based on misunderstanding. The Welsh are a proud nation, proud of being proud one might say. This might be mistaken for arrogance. English people tend to make the Welsh the butt of some very unimaginative jokes concerning sheep and cousins. We like to tease the English a bit too. I'm sure that's why there are so many stories floating around of infamous pubs where the conversation is switched to Welsh as soon as an Englishman is detected. Nevertheless, a lot of it is historical and not just as some say - Edward I etc. There was the banning of our language, the pollution of the coalfields, the Miner's strike, the treatment of the people of Aberfan, the flooding of Capel Celyn to name but a few. My great nan was beaten by her teacher for speaking Welsh, her first language, for example. I don't think we blame English people for those things. It's just that the government has a history of treating Wales very badly - our entire country was run by the most junior member during the Welsh office days! Most English people don't know about these things and therefore see our carping about the past as hatred. It's not - we just want a bit of recognition for a few of the wrongs that were done. Look up the things I've mentioned to see for yourselves. We really do have something to moan about.

England 'annexed' Wales in the 13th century (by annex, I mean pillage, murder etc). There were many battles, many rebellions. Eventually the English ruled, and attempted to drive the Welsh language to extinction. If you were caught speaking Welsh under English rule, you had to wear a thing called 'The Welsh Knot'. This was a large piece of wood worn around the necik, and for little children it wasn't very pleasant.
However, the attempt to drive out our language only succeeded in strengthening it. Currently there are approx 35-40% of Welsh speakers in Wales. In some areas it is close to 80%.
English have long been buying second homes in Wales, making the house prices unreachable for native Welsh folk. Many thousands of Welsh cannot afford houses in their own villages now, due to the price-hike caused by the influx of mostly English.
There are many more reasons for the animosity, and believe me, it is felt by a large amount of people here. Same as Scotland and Ireland too.

Personally I think its really ridiculous to automatically "hate" someone just because of where they were born or where they grew up. Why don't people base their opinions of other people on their personalities and for who the individual is and not be judgemental dicks.Being from wales and having english friends i can honestly say that there are Welsh people who are really nice and there are Welsh people who are *** holes just like there are English people who are really nice and English people who are *** holes!

I don't think the English do hate the Welsh particularly. Everyone in Britain who isn't English hates the English. Part Jealousy, part history, part idiocy.

For one thing, it's free for the Welsh to cross the Severn Bridges to get out of Wales, but we English have to pay to get in their country.
They also seem to be a little bitter over some bloke called Edward I. he was a bit rough with them I think.

England has long subjected other nations and other people to the most hideous oppression in the history of the world.
Anyone who has read a history book will be able to see that England has been responsible for invasions, executions of the leaders of other countries and the most horrific examples are in Ireland, Scotland and Wales.
Do a search on the Anglo Saxon conflict over a thousand years ago and your answer will be right there in front of you.
