Recently my mother took 1 week off from work and flew 1500 miles across the country to stay with me after I had back sugery. I want to send her a "thank-you" gift but I am on a tight budget. Flowers are just too darned expensive. My mom is 63, still works full time (at a stressful job), is VERY low maintenance and not interested in salons, spas, manicures/pedicures etc. She is not high tech (does not have or want a cell phone), but she does have a home computer and enjoys keeping in touch via e-mail. My dad is retired so he usually does the cooking and cleaning. My mom pretty much comes home from work, eats, and falls asleep in front of the TV (they don't have cable or a DVD player). She enjoys taking weekend trips to visit her grandsons (ages 13 and 7). She also enjoys gardening (when in season) but she has arthritis and can't do very much, physically. She is very creative and sometimes makes shadowboxes as gifts. Any suggesstions for a gift, preferably under $30???

There are several things you can do.

1. Get her a gift card to her favorite spot to eat out.

2. There are some DVD players under $30.00 if you shop around and find it. I know at Christmas they were on sale and still might be at Best Buy, Circuit City, Wal*Mart, etc.

3. Find out what new roses she would like to grow in her yard and send her some. Your local nursery stores can help you decide on some and will even ship them for you. Most nice roses are about $5.00 - $10.00 a bush if you are careful and don't buy the high priced ones. They will last a number of years with little care except for pruning and cutting flowers when they bloom so more flowers will bloom. If not roses, then find out what her favorite bulb kind of flowers are and send them. They will bloom for many years and give her bouquets to put indoors. Planting roses or bulbs usually isn't very difficult and your local nursery people can give you suggestions, etc. on what would be appropriate for your mom. All plants are usually rated by zones and they can figure out what zone your mom lives in and give you the right ones. You can also contact The National Arbor Day Foundation for help at www.arborday.org or 888-448-7337 and they can send you their catalog.

the best gifts are homemade ones... for christmas I had made my mom a "photo box" I bought a unfinished wooden box at "michaels" a local craft store for $3.00 and some decopage past for $5.00 and also i used pretty floral tissue paper (the kind you'd use for wrapping gifts) and i took some photo's of myself and my mom and my daughters and just decopaged them onto the box, she cried... if thats too much you could put together a small scrap book or photo album. If your really on a tight budget a simple thank you note with a handwritten message inside from you can't go wrong.

Personally I think something homemade and personal would be best. And as she is creative herself, she would definately appreciate it more.
Do you have lots of photos of the family?
If so how about making a special collage of photos in a frame.
Ask other family members to help you out with pics.

If you are not good at making things then I would suggest from the list above:
Weekend travel bag with wheels

Create a small, short scrapbook. Memories are very powerful, and happy. Scrapbooks are really creative, and cool.

Scrapbook supplies needed:
-A scrapbook (Usually around $10 at Wal-Mart)
-Sciccors
-Glue
-Pictures
-Pens
-Tape
-Love

And you've got a perfect present. Out of time? Just get some pictures, and stuff them into a photo album. Wrap it up with some colorful ribbons and curl it.

There you go,

Hope it helps!

Love ya,
xoxo

what about a webcam for the two of you to use, so you can see each other instead of just sending emails? They are pretty inexpensive nowadays.
