How about seeing a museum? The Legion of Honor at the Presideo was one of the most beautiful museums I've been to. It isn't just the usual paintings, it also has all sorts of beautiful and rare objects. The link below has information on free admission. It has a list of all the museums in the San Fransisco area.
Above all, have a good day with your father. Mine has been gone since 1990. I miss him all the time. Have an extra good time for the rest of us who can't be with our Dads.

I think for his 70th you should honor all the years you and him, and your mom (if he's still married) have spent together. Make it an especially special evening, by taking him to his favorite restaurant, then maybe some of your favorite haunts that you and him liked when you were a kid. Share favorite memories of the good times. Celebrate his life and your love for him. :) Possibly make up a photo album of pictures of happy memories over the years, or a specific memory you want to enjoy over again.

If it were my father, I would want to do something that brings back memories of his younger days. You might go on a tour that includes some historical things from the 1930's through the 1950's. Include a nice lunch or dinner in one of the very nice places on the waterfront.

Take him out to eat at a nice restaurant for some of his favorite foods and give him a kiss from me. My father died 21 days before his 70th birthday - I sure miss him!

If he's not married, hire a woman striper and have her pop out of a cake. Just for the fun of it. You could try a hot air ballon ride, or a cook out with some sea food.. cajun style.

Throw him a party in a Mex food resturant.
Invite all his old friends so he can catch up with them.
