People have been saying that my friend is gay but I don't believe it's true. I can't tell if its a joke that just passes around or if it true? He does hang out with a lot of girls..? He also dresses nicely.

Okay, to be honest it should make a huge difference in your friendship. It's okay to think that you're friend is gay but what made you good friends with him? Being gay shouldn't change the way you appreciate your friendship with him. Ya he might be gay, BIG DEAL, I have a lot of gay friends and yes at first its' awkward but trust me it gets fine. The only thing that makes you think twice is your outside peers. Don't listen to them, just be friends with him because those type of friends are the true friends who will always be there for you!

I've had gay friends that are the greatest dressers and have tons of female friends... I've also had gay friends that are horrible in the wardrobe department...
If you are interested in him, for dating, then just ask him to hang out, go to a movie, go out for coffee, drinks... whatever. If he's interested in you, you'll know, or you can ask.
If you are not interested in him romantically, then what does it matter.... You are friends now, and just because he chooses to be with men, that should not change your friendship, right?
It's a good friend that will help protect him, if the others are joking, whether it is true or not.

Is it going to affect your relationship with him one way or the other?
Just because someone hangs out with a lot of chicks and dresses nice does not make them gay.

My son has a lot of female friends and always dresses appropriately...he's DEFINITELY NOT GAY.
Why is taking care of one's appearance and having friends of the opposite gender suddenly a "gay" thing?
Whatever happened to be just being nice? Whatever happened to just looking nice?
Is it a new rule that all straights look like they just came out of a war zone and treat members of the opposite sex like dirt?
I must have missed that memo.
