Absolutely! I know so many smart people (in the sciences, particularly) who have considered going into teaching but decided not to because they can earn so much more money elsewhere, and get more respect in the process. About the only people who go into teaching with a degree in science are people whose spouses make good money (I know that's true for me!).

I respect them and love them for what they do too, but the answer is no. It is not right to artificially raise somebody's salary. Who decides? And who made that person ruler over the money of the rest of us? Besides, studies show no correlation between teacher salaries and how well kids learn.

For example, my kids go to a private school, and I know the teachers there make 1/3 or more less than what they would make in public school. But I also know they are getting an excellent education, with or without our involvement.

So, for as much as I love and respect teachers, I can't agree that simply throwing more money at the problem will help.

Yes I do. The reason for my anwser is because if there where not teachers then there would not be the people that run the world today. For example if Presidnet Bush had not been educated then he would not be our President. I know there are people out there that think Bush is a crappy President, but honestly if you had to do he job don't you thinkn that it would be extremly hard deciding on what to do with the county. Espeacial when there are people who critize your opinions and how you do your job. I think that if we did not have teachers we would still be cave men and maybe even a lower statue of cave men because even they learned how to survive and evolve.
In a way teachers are the creates of the world. They teach the men and women of the future and the leaders that they will one day be. Teachers have a lot of power because they could teach children to be good, pure, and to love the world they live in or they could do the opposite of this. I believe teachers deseave more pay because they create the future of the world.

Teachers are in the business to educate our kids for the future.
They are under paid and over worked, yes but a pay increase
require a change in the complete educational systems. We
all need more money but to just give someone a pay increase without getting anything back. The kids are not getting a good
education due to many problems and one is the money issue.
If, paying them more will make them more determine and
willing to teach better. Perhaps, we need to look at the teachers
that are working and evaluate the out come of the children.

Run of the mill teachers are among the biggest whiners in the country. Because of the unionization of teachers, they are overpaid and under worked, but they have no reference point with which to understand that. Great teachers are rare and are certainly underpaid. Average teachers or below are common and are way overpaid.

When you look at teacher's pay, you much calculate their take-home paycheck and their invisible paycheck which includes better benefits than anyone in the private sector, more time off than people in the private sector, but perhaps the biggest benefit is that they are pretty much unaccountable for the poor job that they do.

I would like to see us pay great teachers more. The problem is how to define that and to govern it. Because school administrators are even more incompetent than run of the mill teachers, I would not trust them to run that.

This is a shameful scandal. When I went to school, there were many good teachers and some great ones. Once my generation went to college and on into teaching, the who profession has seriously declined.

When I was in school, teaching was much simpler.. parent's actually disciplined students.. principals could spank back then.. My parent's cared about my grades and did what they could to help me. Now a days.. parent's don't care.. they expect the school to teach morals, math, English, etc and then we wonder why kids are the way they are.. Teachers work extremely hard and the behaviour of students in HORRIBLE.. they have to deal with guns in school, being afraid for their life.. students with learning disabilities.. They are not just teachers, they are police, counselors, parents, etc.. i use to think teachers worked 8-3 and that was it.. WRONG.. nobody sees all the extra time that is spent making out and grading tests, decorating rooms and walls (elem. school), etc.. As far as I am concerned teachers Will NEVER make enough for the crap they deal with.. and now, they are having to spend over half their day teaching illegals kids how to add 1 + 1.. in THEIR language..

I'm a teacher and I' don't think I'm necessarily underpaid, but ask anyone with any job, and they would probably feel they deserve more.

What we would like more of is respect. Teaching is brutally difficult. People who aren't teachers will never understand, and will always complain that we are overpaid. That's hogwash. Don't point the finger at us until you walk a mile in our shoes. Try subbing for week and then tell me how easy it is. You'll be begging for July and August.

Yes. With all they have to go through each day, they deserve a little extra something. Without teachers, no one would know much of anything. We need to give teachers the respect, and the pay they deserve.

absolutely.... teachers shape us and show us our potential. ask yourself who's truly more important to the world,a teacher that helps someone reach their potential and possibly discover a cure for a disease,a solution to global warming or a mid level manager for some retail giant who's only purpose is to separate you from as much of your money as possible? it seems like a simple question

OF COURSE...IF IT WAS NOT FOR TEACHERS PEOPLE WOULD NOT EVEN BE ABLE TO GET THOSE HIGH PAYING JOBS. THEY TEACH US EVERYTHING WE KNOW, AND THEY DESERVE A BETTER SALARY THAN ANYONE ELSE.
