in july im going from NYC to dayton, OH, what is the cheapest mode of transport?

Walk. (Kidding.) The fares for buses, trains and planes vary almost daily. The easiest, safest thing to do is to go on-line and check all of the fares. And for your own safety, don't hitchhike.

If you're going in July, you could order plane tickets now and probably get a round trip from NYC to Cleveland, Columbus or Cincinatti for relatively cheap, I'm not sure if Dayton has its own airport or not but I'd guess it's probably more expensive than the bigger cities. Personally I would take a plane to one of the three cities I mentioned and have someone pick you up there if possible. If you ride a bus it will be AT LEAST a day both ways, I know this from personal experience.

Well, walking would be the cheapest but a bus is a good idea. Or you could ride a bicycle, or skateboard, or rollarblade.

walking might not be the cheapest it takes longer so you would need more food lodging shoes etc.car jacking would probably be the cheapest
