I'd say carb cleaner or WD-40 and fine steel wool. Ive used both with success, when i bought tools at farmers auctions an flea markets.

An ordinary pencil eraser will remove light rust and will not mar the surface. Any solvent and wire brush will work.

verify the drain surfaces are thoroughly dry then get a dry brillo pad and rub the dry drain with the dry brillo pad; the rust ought to easily raise off leaving you with a superb bright drain - yet you need to be certain that the two drain and brillo pad have not have been given any wetness in any respect.
