He's a good friend, and a great manager. He's so so so stressed out right now from work, and a pregnant wife. We really want to do something nice for him. We want to make him feel better about life in general.

Here are a few ideas:

1. Order a catered lunch and have a relaxed fun lunch
2. Call Merry Maids and all go in together to have them come in and clean his house once a week for a month -- trust me, his wife will be in a much better mood because of it
3. Have his car detailed
4. Go in together and pay for a nice hotel for he and his wife in a not too far off city so they can have a non-stressed mini-vacation together
5. If he likes golf, buy him a gift certificate for 18 holes somewhere
6. Decorate his office or cubicle with posters, streamers, confetti, and happy brithday signs so he will be suprised when he comes in on the morning of his birthday
7. Make a Happy Birthday Banner and put it in the front ofteh office/lobby for everyone to see when they come in
8. Make a big card and have everyone sign it with their favorite/funniest memory of him...kind of a "Remember when..." those ae always fun

This is something that was done for me by my staff and to this day I cherish the memory. When I arrived at work this is what I found.

My office was completely decorated. Balloons everywhere - I could hardly get into the office, paper streamers as well. There was a huge banner that said Happy Birthday and then my name with an exclamation mark, e.g., Happy Birthday Ted! that ran across the width of my office.

They also ordered in Chinese Food for lunch which we had together in the conference room - everyone toasted me with Cokes wishing me a great year ahead.

They then had a cake with coffee and everyone sang HBday. Someone took photos which I still have.

I hope this is of help.
