Most definitely not. Not everyone has the same views as the next person and that's what the country is built on. Freedom. You shouldn't be forced if you don't want to. I guess it could be and option for students that would like to learn about it, but it should not be mandatory. What happens if someone forced you to go to school on Christopher Columbus day? I wouldn't necessarily be interested in this. Its not a half bad idea but you have to remember what country we live in and what it stands for.

No, we should get the day off in his memory!!!! Just like we get days off for Presidents Day, to remember the presidents; and Columbus Day to remember the discovery of America. We should be proud that MLK Day even exists!!! Don't even think about trying to take it away!

But just so you know I think we should spend more time in history class learning about MLK and the civil rights movement. Simply because we just glazed over it when I was in school. Most of what I know is because I researched it myself. But we shouldn't have to have a "special" day to learn it! It should be taught regularly as a part of american history, and it should be an honor to know that we learn about MLK right along side all the other great leaders of america.

Absolutely... that would be wonderful. Make them attend school and learn about why MLK was such an influence on our society. Make them attend school on a lot of these holidays and learn about why they are important. I was stunned when they were gonna close school for a "National Day of Mourning" for past President Ford. We sat our older kids down and talked about what he did for our country. They did not declare this day when past President Reagan died... What an insult.

MLK is taught in schools as ia part of regular curriculum (or so I would hope). Therefore I do not think kids should be forced to go to school on MLK day.

I THINK STUDENTS SHOULD LEARN ABOUT ALL OF THE PIONEERS AND MARTYRS. IT IS A SHAME NOW THAT NO ONE REALLY KNOWS ANYTHING ABOUT ANY OTHER PIONEERS OTHERN THAN THE FAMOUS THREE MALCOLM X, DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, AND ROSA PARKS. AS A BLACK INDIVIDUAL I WANT TO KNOW MORE ABOUT OTHER PIONEERS AND EDUCATE OTHER PEOPLE, NOT JUST THE AFRICAN AMERICAN CULTURE, BUT EVERYONE.
