Lady Godiva (Godgyfu or Godgifu in its original spelling) was married to Leofric, the Earl of Mercia, in what is now the United Kingdom. Around the time of 1057, she and Leofric got in a dispute over the taxes he had levied on the growing city of Coventry, and he challenged her to ride naked through the marketplace, promising to ease the tax burden if she did so. Lady Godiva took the challenge and became a local legend. At least, that's how the story goes, a story that began to circulate a century after her death. In the 17th century, the detail was added that Lady Godiva had instructed the townsfolk to stay indoors during her ride, but that a man named Tom peeked at her anyway, hence the term "peeping tom."

Lady Godiva lived from about 990 to around 1067, in Coventry, England. The first telling of the story didn't occur until the 1200's.
There is no trace of any version of the story in sources contemporary with Godiva. It's doubtful that there is any historical basis for the "famous" ride.

It's a piece of history. She was Lady Godiva, wife of Leofric, Earl of Mercia, who lived in England around 1065. She is supposed to have ridden naked on a horse through the streets of her local town to free the inhabitants from paying taxes. According to legend all men were required to remain indoors and away from the windows while she rode through the streets. One man named Tom looked out, however, and was struck blind. This is the origin of the phrase ' a peeping Tom'.

Godiva....Godiva (or Godgifu) (c. 990? – September 10, 1067) was an Anglo-Saxon noblewoman who, according to legend, rode naked through the streets of Coventry in England in order to gain a remission of the oppressive toll imposed by her husband on his tenants. The name "peeping Tom" for a voyeur comes from later versions of this legend in which a man named Tom watched her ride and was struck blind.

Lady Godiva. I heard that this was a protest against her husband's tax policies in ancient England.
