I've always wanted to visit the pyramids in Egypt and also climb them with a guide. My guess is that's not allowed or by permit only.

It is no longer permitted for the public to climb any of the pyramids on the Giza plateau.
If you have a research or scholastic reason then you may apply by letter, to the Department of Tourism in Egypt.Dr.Zahi Hawass and Mark Lehner are the primary Egyptologists, involved in the preservation and archeological research.Of all monuments and tombs at the Giza Plateau.
The prime reason climbing the pyramids is no longer permitted is because of accidents. In the past too many fatal, and near fatal falls have occured by tourists and thier guides.
This has been the situation for over 20yrs.
Remember, an average of 10,000 tourists visit this site daily .
I suggest you don't even try and risk it when you think no one is looking. As some with too much bravado have done.
Someone is always looking, and you may easily find yourself in a quite nasty situation with the Tourist, Civil Police and Military that are stationed at the site 24hrs a day.
There are over 200 pyramids in Egypt as well as the better known ones at Giza and Saqqara.
The incredible flow of tourists and the pollution from the city of Cairo and the ever encroaching suburbs. Is having a negative effect on the attempts at maintaining preservation.
This applies especially to monuments made from the local limestone such as the Sphinx.
It is the breath and persperation of tourists that is doing the most harm to "the big three".
On a rotation system, they are open to the general public.
If you go inside one of these amazing monuments it is an experience you will never forget.
The Great pyramid in particular, is quite a strenuous exercise. It is not recommended for those with breathing, heart or spinal problems.
If you are at all claustrophobic don't attempt it. As once you are inside it is almost impossible to turn around and go out, due to the continual flow of tourists.
There are railings for support so try and avoid putting your hands, which will be perspiring,on the walls. This creates a caustic effect.
There are no heiroglyphs or wall decorations except graffitti from the very early Egyptologists from the 17th+18th centuaries.
Some find the Kings chambers an ideal place to meditate, due to their positioning.
However most find it humid and uncomfortable. If you go into one of the pyramids don't forget to take your water bottle with you it is very thirsty work.
But as I mentioned an experience you can never forget.

I was surprised when I went to Egypt the actual number of pyramids that are there. You'd never have time to see them all. The three great pyraminds are not climbable, for the most part. One you can go into the chamber, deep underground, but if you have feels of being underground and in small spaces, I don't recommend it. The other, you can go up about 5 course of steps. Then there is a man who if you pay a couple dollars to, will let you inside to see a room there, but that's as high as you go. There is also another small building off to the side of that pyramid. We paid the entry guard and he let us in, even though I guess this is normally off limits now. What an incredible place that was. Be careful of the camel scams around the great pyramids though!

Unfortunately it has become against the law. When my father was 20 he climbed to the top of the biggest of the three pyramids in Giza, but nowadays it is forbidden. It's dangerous! To lose a step means death.

You're not allowed to climb any of pyramids except the first two or three stones...but you can do another interesting thing, entering the pyramid itself through its door !

Used to until a couple of tourists fell and killed themselves. Goes without saying that you can not use climbing equipment. So as an amateur climber you are at a disadvantage to say the least.

i don't think you can.. i mean you can sit on the basics (the first 3 levels) and there is a room with a guard on the out side you can go inside the room (you have to pay i think..) but not climb that whole thing that would take forever!! it's actually impossible LOL
