Try dish detergent diluted with water. Detergent dissolve oils and grease, soap just emulsifies them. Scrub it in with your fingers, then draw up the foam and oil mixture with a flat piece of plastic (a dust pan or CD case work nicely).

Using Resolve or another carpet cleaner afterwards may help clean up the detergent residue and get closer to the carpets normal color. Then just use plain water to pull up the carpet cleaner residue and then pat it dry with dry towels. You may need to go through a few light passes of carpet cleaner and water, but it usually does the trick.

You may think this is crazy but I recently had a new furnace installed and while removing the old furnace the repair men spilled oil all over my beige carpet. I had gotten a tip and used WD-40 it worked like a charm. Check out their website for tips. Good Luck!

shampoo the carpet,

Oil, grease, magic marker and ink can be the dickens to remove. Most janitorial companies or department stores carry a product called DeSolvit. WD40 or Orange Clean also work wonders at removing these stubborn stains. Rubbing alcohol removes ink. Blot on, allow to set 30 minutes and blot to remove. Rinse with sudsy water. Magic marker is generally permanent and you may not be able to remove it.

Try Dawn dishwashing detergent. It's the best thing for breaking down oil.
