Check this link devoted entirely to EA Poe, his works, and biography:

http://bau2.uibk.ac.at/sg/poe/

it has links to many scholarly articles, with attribution. If they are published in journals or from university scholars, that should be a reliable source.

Hope this helps!

Any encyclopedia will help you as will any book that surveys American literature. Both are available in any library. Also in the library, you may well fine several biographies of Poe. He is considered the "father"f the mystery short story genre ("The Gold Bug," "Murders in the Rue Morgue)." However, he is more famous for his horror stories ("Cask of the Amontillado," The Telltale Heart," "Mask of the Red Death," and The Pit and the Pendulum, to name a few). In addition, he was a good poet known mainly for his masterpiece, "The Raven." Also, Poe was a critic and is the only well-known American author who was proficient as a critic, a short story writer, and a poet.

Poe had a girlfriend who lived in Providence, RI. he visited her several times there and had his picture taken in one of the first photo galleries in the country - that's the photo you usually see of him.

I think her name was Sarah Helen Whitman but you should be able to google that easily. He wrote the poem "To Helen" for her. She was a poet too, but a pretty awful one if you can get a copy of her poems online. But after Poe died he was criticized quite a lot. She wrote a book defending him which tells us most of what we actually know about his life.

She loved him but she broke off their engagement because he was an alcoholic.
