No one person probaby know's, but the true answer is probably closer to 66 million, though it is really hard to say. Stalin was a monster, though not truly as evil as Hitler.

What is it with all of the thumbs down, explain yourself!

Nobody knows. In particular, it is difficult to distinguish how many people died within the Soviet Union in purges or as a resul of starvation deliberately created by Stalin's economic policies, whilst it was ruled by Stalin as opposed to those who were killed in the second World War (or Great Patriotic War to use the Russian terminology). Again, it is difficult to disentangle how many died in Stalin's time as opposed to the Russian Civil War before Stalin became leader.

Figures calculated from demorgaphic data about the area of the former Soviet Union, i.e. what the current population is compared to what would be expected if Stailin had not existed and the Second World War had not happened, suggest that the number of people who died under Stalin was greater than 20 million. However, the figures I have seen are much closer to 20 million than 66 million.

When i was doing my History A level i was trying to find a similar answer.... Many reports vary from 20 million to 100 million. The truth is there is no exact figure as during his leadership he done his purges and across the ussr lots of people died due to poor living conditions which people put down to stalin. During his leadership there were only 160 million at most living in Russia so i think the 100 million is to much, i think the figure was 30,237,129 give or take a few lol

It was at least 20,000,000. Have you heard about the famine that took place in Ukraine even before (1932-1933) the Great Patriotic War? That alone killed several hundred thousand, estimates range as high as 10,000,000 for that incident. And then we must take into account post-WWII, when Stalin had his paranoia lapses. Perhaps the true figure of Stalin's genocide of his own people will never be known, but it was high.

That's the problem with mass murder. It's not healthy to take a lot of pictures.

No one knows: Best estimate is 40 million give or take 10 million either way.

The Red Army cleared Nazi minefields by marching their peasants (women and children) through the fields. I could go on with the horror but what's the point?
