It is important because people ARE equal as humans, and treating anyone otherwise would most likely mean you are placing value on something about their appearance or wealth or job.
How to stop oneself from doing it is this: Think of the "you" you are on the inside - just on the inside, the "you" you feel somewhere between your head and your heart and separate from all the packaging.
Then realize that other people have their own "them" under the packaging as well.
If you see yourself as your heart and mind and/or if you've built your identity on what you are on the inside, you will naturally see and treat others equally because you will know that no matter what they look like, no matter what their financial situation is, no matter how intelligent or educated they are, and no matter how else they may be different from you; they are in many ways just like you (and everybody else as well) on the inside.

I believe it is important to treat everyone fairly, not necessarily equally. For example, if we treat people with disabilities the same, or "equally" to everyone else, then their treatment may not be fair. Sometimes it is necessarily to treat people differently to make sure they are treated fairly. For example, a person with a learning disability may need to have a test read to him, or may need to tape record answers. This is different, but fair treatment, giving the person with the disability "equality", but he is not treated "equally". What we need to ensure in our society is that everyone has equal opportunity, not necessarily that everyone is treated the same, or equally.
There is nothing as unequal as the equal treatment of unequals.

its important because we are all human beings and why should anyone not be treated the same .
ensuring it happens is harder it requires alot of learning and doing from parents to teachers to freinds all helping it happen for society as a whole to move on and get on.

It's not important to treat everyone equally because not everyone deserves equal treatment. You treat people on an individual basis based on past experience with them, their level of trustworthiness, level of committment you have to each other.
If someone has a bad past with you, you treat them with disdain. You do not treat your good friends the same way you treat a shiftless bum.

By loving yourself and you will love others. Remember that what you think of others, you think about yourself. If you think someone deserves wrong treatment, then you are really saying that you deserve wrong treatment.
You treat yourself with kindness and dignity, then you will treat others the same way. Everything you do to others, you do to yourself.
Remember this, and you will have no problem with this. Also, if you are questioning the "equality" of others, what you are really saying is you think that YOU are not equal to those you judge.
Be mindful of your actions and you will know how to behave to others.

Your question smacks of idealism. I may vary a little from day to day, the people I deal with will vary, one against the other, and also against themselves from day to day. Emotions and instincts also come into it. Should a person who insults me be treated in the same way as someone who doesn't. You should try to be reasonable with everyone, but not everyone will reciprocate. We are not robots, we are human beings. You interact accordingly.

We all have prejudices and dislikes, so it's hard to treat anyone that is different from you as an equal.
I can recall hundreds of times I was treated as less than human because of preconceived stereotypes and basic physical characteristics.

because if you decide that one person isn't equal, its a slippery slope. its how hitler started with the jews, deciding they weren't equal to the germans, and oh look its heading that way with muslims
