80% of humanity, the religious folks, don't need to ask the meaning of life, the church tells them....the supernatural explanation. But the rest of us can't swallow religious dogma, because there's no evidence. Nobody can prove that there life after death, that people are tortured or rewarded after life or that there's invisible spirits running around.

I've come to two conclusions recently:

1. Life has no meaning
2. Life has a million meanings.

First, there's a certainty that death and annihilation awaits not only you, but the Earth in general. It's an astonomical certainty that our sun will supernova and leave the earth a burnt crisp, not to mention all the other extinction level events around the corner.

Second, the million things that give us meaning are the pleasurable experiences we can conjure up during the short period we are here on the earth, in the form of the relationships we have with our kids and other people, and the 'housekeeping' types of purposes. What i mean by that are the curing disease, ending hunger, improving literacy, reducing crime, preventing war, helping other kinds of things.

So the bottom line is, we only have a temporary meaning to life, to reduce pain and increase pleasure, other than that everything is lost to oblivion.

To be or not to be? "To be" is temporary and "not to be" is inevitable !!!!!!!!!!111

so many people that have answered this question have been given more thumbs down than thumbs up. thats crazy. i could understand if they had all written "the meaning of life is to murder babies" or something. but to write positive things and for that to be frowned upon.... something a bit silly about that.

i don't know what the meaning of life is though. and until i find out i'm just going to play it by ear.

Nature gave us life, and therefore life is the meaning. One should not ponder the meaning of life, but to live life, and ask what meaning they have got from what they done in it.

I have been observe-ing the human race since the 2nd grade. that was 44yrs. ago. what my studies have produced is this. The human race is at the top of food chain for now. ur ? is so generalised that it is hard to diagnose. when u generalise u loose so much information. speaking from a biological stand point, this is what is a natural progression might look like: the human race is a highly progressive destruction of our habitat. As near as i can tell humans have reached its peak in its ability to survive in its own environment. humans are on the down side. the high side of the down side. but humans will not let go of its own ability to destroy everything it comes in contact with. It is so hard to predict what will happen on this down hill race. to many variables. there is no way any one can say with any certainty. this might be one i might suggest, " put ur head between ur legs & kiss ur *** good bye'!

Normally I would have given you the answer of 42, from the movie Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy, but last time I gave just the 42 bit of it, I got a violation..... stupid huh?
As for what I think the meaning of life is, it's to live and love to the best of your ability. there, that's better than just plain old 42 huh?

To me the meaning of life is one day being able to log into the philosophy section of Yahoo Answers and NOT seeing someone ask what the meaning of life is again. But we all know that's just a pipedream...

The meaning of life as i have found out so far, is to be a human being who doesnt harm anyone in thought or deed. our thoughts and deeds are living energy and that can be proved. Electric is a living energy, you cant see it but you can see the effects of it, radios, computers worked by it etc.To be loving to all persons regardless of creed religion or race. To judge no one as you wouldnt like to be judged. We judge ourselves in the end of life here on Earth and we are shown all deeds done here on earth will love and compassion by the loving God who punishes no one.
we as human souls have to understand that there is a life in another realm or dimension in the spirit realm where we are all equal. Our thoughts and deeds are heard by all. we have to learn to be master of our thoughts to be positive and caring and compassionate to all living things on this earth. And in doing so, we progress spiritualy and because we have progressed , we help mankind as a whole progress. We each have a part to play on this earth to be the best we can be. Then one day it might be that Earth will be peacefull and loving place to live for all life which lives on it. hope this helps a bit. we are all here for a reason to learn to love to care and to have compassion for all. take care, Pat

The meaning of life is simply to live. A not so simple meaning of life would be to better our species (though competition as an example).

but 42 works just as well....

Life – it has a meaning and loving purpose - you just have to find your purpose and live it.

I believe every person is here for a definite purpose. Each person is special and valuable; that refers to me, you, your family, friends, in fact everybody! There is a loving plan for each of our lives here on earth and there is no such thing as coincidence. I don't believe that anything in life happens by chance and that every aspect of our lives points to something deeper.

You need to decide now to live for God rather than for yourself. You spend your life on Earth preparing yourself (as best you can) for death. I don't see death as a scary, negative experience, but birth into a bliss filled eternal life with God. I believe that this is something you have to consciously choose or not during your life on earth.

The meaning of life is for us to discover that we are true children of an infinitely loving and merciful God, to find out what our responsibilities are to our Creator, and to fulfill those responsibilities. Each of us is called to affirm, accept and develop the talents God has given us. -
